Triple Theme Time

Here finally are three drawings which I recently completed.

Although each one is related to a different time period in history, they have been joined on this occasion through synchronicity, or maybe through chance :

The first is “Yawning Gnosis” – which I posted as a work in process in my last writing (Feb, 2016). I had briefly stopped writing down my dreams fresh when awakened, therefore they would slowly fizzle into fuzzy formed fragments which I wouldn’t bother to jot down. I believe they somehow went straight back to some storage space in the realm of unconsciousness, unapproachable unless through some sort of meditation, hypnosis, or moksha state. Al this turned into a huge hiatus. There were also other pressing deadlines during that time that came up – some even self inflicted.

The second drawing is a copy after a drawing by a great northern European master I deeply admire, Lucas Cranach the Younger. In my version I highlight a tad more the eyes, and the expression tends more towards a smile. It is a portrait of Princess Elizabeth of Saxony c. 1564 currently at Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museum, in Berlin. I also greatly admire his father, Lucas Cranach the Elder’s work and his depiction of the human figure and features. There is a painting of Judith with the Head of Holofernes at the Ponce Museum of Art in Ponce, Puerto Rico attributed to him which I love. It has his characteristic fantastic style, elegance, beauty, and mood. There is another very similar painting by him with the same name/theme currently at Kunsthistorisches Museum, in Vienna.

P1090610©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz  After Pheidias sculpture  14″ x 17″ graphite & charcoal / 70lb Canson drawing paper

The third is a drawing of the ancient Greek male torso sculpture “Ilissos” attributed to Pheidias c. 438 B.C. which is part of the Parthenon pediments. The sculpture intrigued and inspired me somehow, although it is millennia old, its pose seemed quite contemporary and the visible signs of wear, aging, and damage create to a certain extent a haunting and beautiful contrast.

It is in this light that I delve a bit deeper into the concept of time. The following poem inspired by a recent dream sort of deals on different levels with the impressions of “aging” of fine spirits, fine bodies, and fine attitudes.  Enjoy.

Decanter of Time

Unsure cause of celebration

wrinkled song canteen bar

serve me something fancy

slow bartender grizzled shard

Set some sample glasses

cold cube commissary shine

high priced whiskey bottle

Khronos perfume flask design

Pour gold liquid luster

anxiety my head abounds

is this silky precious elixir

Gaudían Like Structures

The poem ‘Gaudían Like Structures’ is inspired by recent states and frames of mind of futility, struggle, and doubt, and the following dream:

I arrive at the square in the town of Aguada where I grew up as a child and find the church/cathedral totally transformed into a Gaudían like structure. I find this change totally captivating and stand in awe as the lineal symmetry of the old church has become almost alien-like and fluid. I could almost compare it to a classical  musical concert transformed into a Latin jazz jam – both beautiful in their own way.

Above is an update on the slow progress of my drawing Yawning Gnosis. I am currently also working on a double portrait painting that requires much more of my time than is usual because of a looming deadline. Whoosh!

Gaudían Like Structures

Questioning the insane the very existence

harmony feeding fake fat far removed

lowly drippings in this world so slow

strong emotions riding hard gross stone.

Despair design degree disgrace

headlights dimmed low

eyesight displaced.

Cathedral temple church crumbles,

revisiting landscape.

Gaudían like structures replace antique line

I marvel strong spectacle

staggering beauty sublime.

Delight design degree acclaim

numerous questions remain,

vision version renewed

multi hued ludic tunes

reign ample prelude.

I’ve included a photo of Casa Batlló and of La Pedrera which are similar to the image in the dream and one ofthe church “Parroquia San Francisco de Asis de Aguada”. The images are from the site gaudiclub.com and from wikimedia commons.

Mystic Aegis

Version 2

©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz Aegis (detail) 14″ x 11″ graphite / 98lb Canson mixed media paper

I have been enjoying the process of searching continuously for three dimensionality and realism from the subtleties present and then meticulously transferring this information onto current drawings.

The process entails a persistent pursuit and exploration of perception. I posted a detail of the initial stages of the drawing “Aegis” in the previous post and the one above is the same detail almost complete. You will find a more complete version at the end of the poem “Mystic Aegis” (a short poem inspired by a couple of recent dreams). “Que lo Disfruten!”

Mystic Aegis

On water walking brawny steed,

galloping feather-light fair stride,

ocean prancing marvel deed,

from floating mountain nimble glide.

Stagnant dismal aqueous lake,

backward soggy gutter ground,

flash flood clearing ample slate,

raw fresh crystal gushing sound.

Phoenix wing-free lone Pegasus,

quartet legged heuristic flight,

savant savior mystic aegis,

mythic escort sole requite.

Song

I’ve finally found my way back here after a few holiday blogpost-free weeks which honestly I needed to recharge and finish up details on the graphite drawing “Song” and start another which is a nude male torso.

Great New Year wishes to all!

The drawing Song is an example of a meticulous study of light and shade and the different levels present and how they are perceived and transferred to paper via in this case graphite pencils. I have used the spectrum of 4H to 8B. In terms of composition, I have chosen to break the initial triangular form I was intending into a more diagonal semi parallel line form. The poem “Song” is from current musings on life and the drawing. Enjoy!

SONG

Dance float till the sounds,

soft aroma emotions,

finding delicate windows,

in slow saviour motions.

Savorer of mirrors,

self indulgent disguise,

absurdity dragging circles,

song free luscious sky.

Hey! you there!

bring me back from despair,

far away from this song,

from this free loving form,

this maker of meaning,

this happenstance cause.

Song,

crash waves on my eyebrows,

sun bursting desire,

wash over this symbol,

shine pleasant conspire,

moist feminine salt,

breeze humid estate,

conspicuous these locks,

liquid

languid

escape.

Dreamland Awakening

©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz Dreamland Awakening 23.5″ x 18.25″ oil / archival mat board

A sort of meticulous study of subtleties and nuances that might appear imperceptible to the naked eye contingent upon the light angle and its intensity.

A fresh off the easel self portrait in oils along with poetry vaguely inspired by dreamland and reflections on the variety of chance states and characters transiting through so called reality.

Unreliable mirror

Dreamer in Disguise

DSC_0011

©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz Reflection on a Dreamer 16.5″ x 13.25″ oil & soft pastel / archival mat board

The self portrait “Reflection on a Dreamer” is a recent study in cool, neutral, and warm tones achieved primarily by observing my reflection in the studio mirror in the space of a few nights.

The portrait started out with eyes wide open but then gradually transformed into what it is now, although a few minor details should allow me to consider it completed, it is still in process. The poetry is once again based primarily on a recent nightly encounter.

Dreamer in Disguise

Faceless dreamer shroud

searching fruitless for reflection

long open white lab coat

fraud garment of perfection

arms supple in a circle

head invisible to my eyes

plasticity reigns this realm

soft mirror of disguise.

The dreamer cloaked as artist,

the dreamer as a fool

dreamer of distinction

dreamer molecule

dreamer fine magician

dreamer full of science

dreamer Nosferatu

dreamer pact in silence

dreamer as a hermit

dreamer with no clothes

dreamer close the circuit

dreamer chews and chose.

Alpinia Purpurata

The painting “Alpinia Purpurata” is based on a floral arrangement usually found on my kitchen table. It had been there for quite some time, maybe a few years.

When the leaves and the blossoms would start to whither we would simply replace them and keep the basic pattern consistent. Many repeat guests to our home can attest to seeing this undeviating arrangement over time. The poem is partially based like other poems before it, on a recent dream sequence and the painting.

Alpinia Purpurata

Secret unopened letter of love,

infinite paths of strange augur above,

passenger back seat, white whisper of silence,

my immovable gaze, last laudable license.

Alpinia Purpurata pair blossoms,

longevity, strength, intense fiery passion,

from kingdom Cantata, host of red phantoms,

wealth beyond measure, diversity, concessions,

silken thread crystal womb,

golden vase scarlet bloom.

Fluttering heart dances, impaired vision strains,

where shall I take chance, destinations your aim,

shall I read your romance,

shall I tear you in chains,

shall I break free from trance,

shall I toss you unclaimed,

or shall you unopened remain.

Cling Oscillate Cloud

©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz Chrysalis 23″ x 30.5″ soft pastel, charcoal, acrylic / sealed cotton watercolor paper

A puzzling encounter with space and air flight related symbols from a ground perspective written in verse form and the recent mixed media work titled “Chrysalis”.

I was inspired to finish this mixed media work, which was close to completion but had been left on the back burner for quite a while, after writing the poem. I recalled having the work available and on the “ready for finishing touches” list, which seemed somehow befitting. Hope you enjoy.

Cling Oscillate Cloud

Whitish bright light dusk impregnated mist,

outside, the streets, desolate luminous kiss,

nothing around me except structures unbound,

colors forsaken,

abandoned,

no sound.

Up ahead is a symbol of space flight that is wobbling,

NASA’s trans border shuttle, rope tied and dangling,

pall nebula it’s rear, synchronous pendulum swing,

both shuttle and blank cloud oscillate unison cling.

Approaching said spectacle, white haze all around,

quite reach touch this vehicle,

incredulous,

astound.

Stand and observe, time dubious plain sight,

sky distant chained airplane, amiss in high flight.

Deepened Dark Depths

DSC_0005

©Alexander Rosado-Muñoz Night Sentinel self Portrait 23″ x 17.75″ soft pastel / archival mat board

A night ride through boulders, curves, cliffs, caves, concert halls and back out again.

Deepened Dark Depths

Surrounded anchored boulder dream, curves and cliffs and ledges mount,

tightened seat belt secures our scene, reversing first, final credence fount.

(We arrive. Exit vehicle transport space).

Silver carpet covered stairway,

underground entrance crowded cave,

waiting to get in –walls drab gray,

swarm of beings besiege our stay.

(A baby’s coach to carry).

Alone a mother to do it wants,

her weary tries remain in vain,

my help I offer to ease the strain,

aloft tot carriage primordial aim.

(The vessel thus lowered to deepened dark depths).

Bypassing bystanders,

rehearsing musicians,

resounding hall theater,

violinist enthroned.

(Concert hall exit detected).

Two doors further forward,

we reach ample clearance,

at last some coherence,

bright light on my eyes,

tis brief, I succeed,

my vision’s impedance,

once more crowd’s appearance,

confusion reigns free.

A Self Portrait inspired drawing from a while back and two fragmented facial figures (one is a portrait of the painter Francis Bacon) compose this post.

The Self Portrait inspired drawing like many of my SP’s are mostly somewhat based on appearances and have more to do with actual in the moment mental structures, and emotional outpourings of somehow timeless biases captured during the process. The poem is based on a comical dream, one of a few recent dreams that have already occured this month of October. Hope you enjoy.

Famined Fellas Feast or (Blatant Bullshit)

Building full of rooms, one is mine no doubt,

wander thru a hallway, wayward route is out,

(pinpoint forward yawning door, famined fellas feast),

I glance and count them four, perhaps acquainted to them all, (twain at least before).

“Buen provecho” (enjoy your meal) I roar, treading thru the hall.

No responses reach reception,

no revelation loud and clear,

swivel around and shout once more,

low utterance (uh-huh) I hear.

Incredulous mine ears,

tis strenuous to conceive,

I keep walking with a stride,

blatant bullshit don’t believe…

…in neither dreamland, nor waken wide.
